I have read many posts by "Wayong" in both lists and I am impressed that you have experience in many areas. You are correct that there is not much written for the art teacher to guide them in the uncomfortable field of special needs students. My State Art association is doing a day long seminar on this subject this month. In my experience with listening to art teachers voice their concerns I have heard the outstanding concern is the lack of study in the skills we need to work successfully with special needs children. When I first started teaching art in the early 60's I realized that the training I had was missing an important element and returned to work on my masters in school guidance - the only place I could find the kind of courses that would give me some insight into the behavior that was surfacing when children did art with very open ended assignments. I still seek out material to read about how the brain functions and how the arts are a unique tool to reach in and open up learning and feelings. Unfortunately there is a void in the training of art educators that needs to be filled and a few good books are needed that can be understood by the art educator who is entry level in this field. Someone on the list mentioned that some art teachers do cookie cutter art. When everyone does the same thing in the same way the teacher can predict the outcome and feel success. Without the needed training it is very uncomfortable to deal with what may surface if the creativity and open ended work is in progress. If a teacher doesn't have the training it certainly feels safer to work with the predictable. Wayong, You can write in Colorado just as well as you can in NYC! Think about writing a book that chronicles some of your successful experiences in the field that would be an easy read and informative for art educators. I would eagerly buy such a book! Will you be in Colorado in the first week in August? I still have plans for coming to Colorado Springs for high school reunion. If I stay over a few days maybe we can meet somewhere between. Yes, there is creativity in public schools...some more than others.
