Actually, you aren't paying to play. You're paying to have a place to
perform, to have tech support, to have an organization handle ticket sales,
general publicity, etc. In return, you get a percentage of the ticket
sales. At least, that's how the Minneapolis Fringe Festival works.
Compared to renting a performance space, hiring a tech crew, etc. it's not a
bad deal at all. Have a look at the following link for the Minneapolis
