ACTFORCHANGE ACTIVISM UPDATE: October 30, 2002

Authority to Invade Iraq
b.. ACTIVISM OPPORTUNITY: Urge the U.N. Security Council to Vote No
on Iraq Invasion
c.. ACTIVISM OPPORTUNITY: Protect Voter Access
d.. A CORRECTION AND ANOTHER CHANCE TO DONATE TO ANTI-WAR EFFORTS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tell President Bush Not to Use Congressional Authority to Invade Iraq

Congress has now given President Bush the unfettered right to invade
Iraq. But this does not mean he will. While Congress is out of session,
there remain many ways to let our nation’s elite know that an invasion of
Iraq is a bad idea. We urge all who share our concern to let President Bush
know that you oppose the invasion.

Send an email to President Bush and urge him not to use congressional
authority to invade Iraq.

Please forward this newsletter to your friends and help spread the
word about this important campaign!

Urge the U.N. Security Council to Vote No on Iraq Invasion

The U.N. Security Council and a rapidly growing American anti-war
movement have already slowed down the Bush Administration’s rush to war over
Iraq. But slowing down a juggernaut is not the same as stopping it.

It is essential that the U.N. be aware of the extent of domestic
American opposition to a unilateral U.S. invasion of Iraq. Right now,
President Bush is using the Congressional resolution giving him the right to
use military force as evidence that he has the support of the American
people.

Urge Secretary-General Kofi Annan to use his influence within the U.N.
to block a resolution authorizing military force before the U.N. weapons
inspectors have had sufficient time to do their job.

      Take action!

      Protect Voter Access

Most observers predict that control of both the Senate and the House
will depend on voter turnout in a small number of races around the country.
After the debacle of Florida 2000, many vowed not to let turmoil and
political intimidation happen again. But now, two years later, essentially
nothing has changed. While President Bush has just signed legislation
providing funds for state election officials to modernize their voting
system, none of it is available for this election and no structural reforms
have been put in place.

Attorney General John Ashcroft has announced the “Voting Access and
Integrity Initiative.” Unfortunately, it appears to be focused far more on
attacking possible voter fraud among minority voters than it does in
removing obstacles to vote for everybody. Mr. Ashcroft needs to hear now
that while reducing fraud is essential, ensuring that all eligible voters
can cast a ballot is even more important.

      Take action!

A Correction and Another Chance to Donate to Anti-War Efforts

In our 10/8/02 ActForChange newsletter, we indicated that a grant had
been made from the Iraq Peace Fund to The Friends Committee on National
Legislation. The grant had actually been made to the Friends Committee on
National Legislation Education Fund, a Washington D.C. based advocacy
organization, educating and mobilizing grassroots activism. In addition,
while they do occasionally work together, the Friends Committee on National
Legislation is not an affiliate of the American Friends Service Committee.
ActForChange regrets the error.

The $130,000 matching grant for the Iraq Peace Fund has not yet been
exhausted. Donate today to help stop war before it begins.
