I've always found the British "the Argentine" amusing, though they 
seem to have dropped that now.

And don't forget "The United States."

I don't see any imperialist agenda here, but when what we all knew as 
"the Ukraine" separated from Russia it was very insistent on being 
called "Ukraine" without the "the."
