Theresa,
I don't necessarily agree with all that you've said, and I do salute your
courage and concern for your students. Having worked in the so-called
mainstream print media, my only suggestion would be to write a shorter
letter. It has a greater chance of publication, unless the editors plan to
use it in entirety as a counterpoint.
And finally, and I don't mean this facetiously; it is Salman Rushdie, not
Salmon Rushdie. He is well-known enough an author in
post-colonial/post-modern discourse, for his spelling to be easy to remember
by now. Perhaps a small point, but again, my years in the mainstream print
media have taught me how important it is to get the small facts right. (On a
related point of accuracy, which is why, I was not at all surprised when it
was finally uncovered that the so-called fake film of Palestinians
celebrating the bombing of the WTC was, in fact, real, and that the
Palestinian Authority threatened other journalists who might be filming
similar shots -- you might legitimately question whether the media should
have shown those images, but questioning its authenticity did more harm to
the Palestinian cause -- I'm aware this is not strictly related to the issue
of getting someone's name right, however......).
Salil
