Yes, thought that he was alive too -- glad to have the confirmation from
Hena Maes-Jelinek.  Anyway, no mention of his death in the brief biography
on Robert Bennett's Wilson Harris website:

I was wondering though if it was Sam Selvon who was mistaken for Harris. 
Selvon died in 1994, not 1998, and was born in Trinidad.  I suspect that it
was Harris's friend Denis Williams, who was, like Harris, born in Guyana. 
Williams was perhaps better known as an artist, but he also wrote novels,
including The Sperm of God, which was set in the rain-forest of Guyana. 
Williams died in 1998.  Harris actually wrote an obituary on Williams -- I
suspect this may be one of the sources of the confusion, apart from the fact
that they were closely associated.

As it turns out, I was indeed confusing Harris and Selvon. As Hena
Maes-jelinek has informed me off-list, Harris is alive and well and coming
out with a new book in the spring.
