All -
i came across a lexical concern along time ago - it was as i was trying
to learn to read and write Punjabi, but it came back to mind as a friend
recently sent me a French essay discussing how that language is inherently
'Sexist' due to how it has chosen to masculinize and/or feminize certain
nouns and not others.
After reading the essay, i responded off-handedly to her that the English
language must be 'Egotistical' because it appears to be the only language
where the the word/personal pronoun 'I' is always capitalized. Thus, bringing
back to mind my initial concern from several years before.
Question: Is English the only language on earth where the personal pronoun
'I' is ALWAYS and categorically capitalized? i have done some research,
and believe the answer to be 'yes'. And if verified, what does this suggest
of the imperial legecy and its relationship to the rest of the world? Why
not do away with this piggish lexical reminent of the torturous middle-ages
and put imperial english in its place within a contemporary post-colonial
context?
