In the Republic of Cyprus photo voter id cards have been in use for years.
More importantly though the Republic's constitution provides for separate
electoral rolls for the Greek and Turkish Cypriot population. Since the
partition of the country in 1974 Turkish Cypriot residents in the region now
controlled by Greek Cypriots cannot vote during any elections. Similarly the
non-recognised breakaway Turkish Cypriot state does not provide any
political rights to Greek Cypriots living in that region.
