someone's mentioned burmese days by orwell. i assume
you know that orwell was in the imperial police in
burma from 1921 to 1926. he wrote two essays from that
period: "shooting an elephant" and  "a hanging". all
biographies of orwell have at least a chapter on his
time in burma and there are a couple of articles by
folks who knew him while he was in the police. i'd be
happy to send you the references if you're interested
(i can't list them off the top of my head) since even
if your work is on the police and not orwell
specifically they might be useful. let me know...
