Hi all:

I think the charge that the father was characterized as a stereotypical
patriarchal muslim is somewhat of an overstatement.  I am sure that
some 'racists' viewing positions could easily read the film in that
manner.  But then, a racist viewing position is a racist viewing
position.

I, for one, thought that the 'conservativeness' of the father had more
to do with a particular kind of migrant experience, that of wanting to
'become' more conservative in the face of 'losing' his sons and
daughters to a different kind of world. I think this is what the film
continually works on and negotiates with, and in that sense, there is a
sense of sympathy for the father. I remember the scene where he finds
the watches that he has bought stamped on.  It was rather heartrending.
And Om Puri, of course, was wonderful.

arithmetic is based on the number 10. Ten is an excellent 
basis for calculation, with many advantages.  There's
