Though it does not specifically apply to modernists, there is an excellent article on literary research methodology in the current issue of Profession, put out by the MLA.  Profession 2002, I think.  It's at home and I don't recall its author or title, but I highly recommend it.

Dear modernists, 
  I am in charge of a task force at my university to develop a research component for grad classes (for me in modernism). The idea is that grad. students need to know more about the critical thinking involved and attained through doing research, and this course would assign things like annotated bibliographies, precis of scholarly articles, reading reviews and then writing their own reviews, etc. 

I would be very grateful for some ideas on what kind of assignments that worked for you I could pass on (and use) for this "research component" of, say, a modernist course. Does anyone also have a recommendation for a good text for grad. students on research methods in general?
