Really, the choice offered in Russia is which particular variety
of free market reforms and authoritarian politics you prefer.

Just because the old CP is not in power, and is therefore able to
tap into disullisionment with those who are, is no reason to think
it's a social democratic party - the same was true of the Republicans
when they won control of congress in the USA. The base of its support
socially tend to be bosses in state industry rather than private
( although I don't think we should underestimate the private sector
support the CP gets or the state sector support the "democrats" get ).
