COURSES

1.
The Politics of Mental Health: Implications for Progressive
Theory and Practice

Current controversy regarding the characterization and "treatment"
of mental illness reflects ongoing debate over the nature of
scientific truth, "reasonableness" of rationality and the validity
of subjective experience. Mental health issues may be examined
>from historical, sociological, ideological and psychological
points of view. Depending on interest of participants we can
discuss the implications of the following for progressive
theory and practice: bio-social and psychoanalytical models
and treatment practices, anti-psychiatry/myth of mental illness
perspectives;advocacy and consumer/survivor movements; and
community-based and peer support alternatives.

Course given by Lisa Volkov
Wednesdays beginning May 15

2.
Socialist Politics in the 21st Century

This course will begin by discussing what's left of socialism,
and then examine these questions: whether the working class is
still a force for social change, and how Marxism is relevant
for feminist and environmental politics.

Course given by David Camfield
Thursdays beginning May 16

*Classes begin at 7:30pm and courses usually run 6 weeks.*
Fee is $20 payable at the 2nd meeting, $10 for students,
unemployed and retired. We regret that we cannot provide child care,
but we will waive the fee for those whose attendance requires it.

*All classes take place at the International Student Centre,*
33 St.George Street (just north of College Street), Toronto
