After all, the illusion of a self is surrounded with a haze of definitions,
and dances on a ball like a seal. It seems to be the most intimate
experience of the nothingness which needs to exist or else existence
wouldn't.

As for Derrida and Gadamer, I agree they are close, and also complimentary.
Gadamer gives the benefit of doubt, Derrida doubts the benefit.
