Subject: Lyotard and Emory

For those of you who might be wondering, Lyotard is on the faculty at Emory
but is not currently in the country and does not have an e-mail account
here. He is teaching a class here next semester, Le Différend, l’affect, la
fatigue, is cross-listed between French, Philosophy, and Comparative
Literature. Although Lyotard's is the Coke, I mean Woodruff, Professor of
French and Humanities (i.e. Philosophy and Comparative Literature), and his
appointments are in French, Philosophy, and Comparative Literature, his base
is in French (he's on their web pages). Although I understand that Lyotard's
course offerings are supposed to be anglophone inclusive, I would recommend
French proficiency for those aspiring Emory students desirous of taking
Lyotard's classes. (I caught a colloquium he offered last spring, and my
French was such that I missed everything of his exchange with fellow Emory
French faculty member Philip Bonnefis).
In general: I wouldn't come to Emory thinking that Lyotard is going to be
on my committee, let alone chair it. He's a nice man, but, for various
reasons, he's often out of the country. And if Lyotard's work interests you,
you will probably find the French department more amenable (just in terms of
course work).

Hi Hugh,
I sent Lois a paper on Derrida ages ago and have never heard from her.
Also I wanted to mention that Lyotard is at Emory because I'm applying to
their graduate program in philosophy and the graduate office told me that
he was teaching there.
