Rene,

I want to think and write about your other posts, but now I am also
in the mood for some Gadamer reminiscience, self serving and romanticized
though such exercises may be.

I visited Gadamer in 1995 with a friend from Frankfurt. Gadamer had
expressed interest
in the ms. of SS 1924 which we were studying at the Marcuse Archiv,
and so invited us to come to Heidelberg.

His study faces a large oval shaped "picture window," and the late
afternoon sun was
shining through quite brightly. Gadamer said his eyes watered a lot, and it
seemed the warmth of the sun soothed them.

We were talking about
Heidegger as teacher, and I said I thought he might enjoy hearing my
friend read from the
first lecture. As Jochen began to read, Gadamer closed his eyes, and
turned his chair directly toward the sun. At certain words, he
smiled. After a while, the smile just remained. I watched him
listening to Heidegger's words. The sun flooded the room.
The time of the words seemed to come again.
