You are probably going a bit overboard here, Tom. I have not known any
of the participants on this list to pull this sort of low-blow stuff
about German. Usually when they have something to say about the German
issue its for real. Unfortunately, many of the German terms we are all
dealing with have no direct, simple tranalsation into English. This is
not surprise. Heidegger was famous for making up these sorts of complex
compount terms that even the Germans have trouble with. The problem for
us is the translation. No matter where we read the translation we are
still at the mercy of the translator, and the translator has to struggle
with determining what Heidegger ment in the first place, then how to
find an Enlish word that expresses what he ment. And any English word he
chooses will, unfortunately, already have a historical meaning that may
not be compaitable with the German historical meaning.

I know what you mean about people pulling the "You don't know German"
rabbit out of their hats. But I just have not run up against this here.
