Your reading of the Duden Herkunftswoerterbuch seems OK. H. lets the polysemy 
play, but wants Ereignis to mean more than just event or happening. The 
showing-of-itself is also an ap-propriating of human being to beyng, i.e. to 
where human beings in their essencing properly belong as beyng’s property. The 
opening of beyng is a laying-claim on human being as Dasein. Humans become human 
beings through exposure to the Da of timespace. Standing out in the openness of 
timespace, Dasein has to bring itself to stand against the horizon of time on 
which beings are understood. Time is the preliminary name in H.’s thinking for 
the truth of beyng, or _alaetheia_.
