Gary,

Can only agree:

>But again, I find their potential for
>complementarity---rather than counterposition---very
>attractive.

You may be too hasty here (as you acknowledge)

>But ultimately, I think that the
>complementarity is very supplemental for political thought;
>or, at least, I haven't seen much fruitfulness yet in the
>complementarity.

As far as I can tell the cuts run deep as regrads the modernist -
postmodernist divide. it takes time for these cuts to heal and some sort of
openminded dialogue to get going. perhaps as much as two academic
generations (let's say thirty years from the mid-1990s).

Personally, and in spite of my initial resistance (sic) to Foucault, his
work is indispensable to garnering any sense of the now past present, if you
like. IMO, Baudrillard overtook the shock of Foucault in the 1980s. what is
interesting is the obvious closeness between Baudrillard and the F.School
critique of culture.

Foucault's analyses are now classic, and represent the very best of one very
valuable line of critique re - a critical sociology of knowledge and power.
I think Foucault (and then Baudrillard) supplies what Habermas for all sorts
of reasons leaves out of BFN.

Cheers,

MattP.
