JRS/V.2:#30/August 29, 1998

Jack Rabbit comes to you from Black Rock City, Nevada. Currently home to
400+ dusty souls. By noon Sunday maybe 1000+. Predicted population: 12,000
- 14,000 playful, creative, expressive individuals.

Apologies for not updating you sooner, but duties and responsibilities in
trying to leave San Francisco kept me busier than a Jack Rabbit in heat. :-)

This city is BIG: bring a bike if you can. Those without can borrow an art
bike from Pedal Camp. Please return them, they are not for you to keep.

This city IS WINDY: more than once a tent has rolled across the playa. Do
NOT use the stakes that come with your tent, they are meant for normal
conditions. I heartily recommend something like 10" nail stakes. I have
found them to be 100% reliable. G&M Sales in San Francisco has them for 49
cents each. Wind comes from various directions, but most frequently from
the South towards the open playa.

FIRE: Due to the wind, fires in encampments are NOT ALLOWED. This is
SERIOUS folks. A fire on the playa is dangerous. Wind blown embers will
ignite a tent, clothing, shade structure in minutes. Enjoy the fireplaces
the DPW made which will line the Esplanade.

The evenings are mild, but a jacket is definitely recommended as the wind
continues.

DEHYDRATION IS REAL. Drink water, drink water, drink water. Go nowhere
without a full canteen or water bottle. I found it hard to sleep last night
as my mouth, eyes & nose were dry. High SPF chapstick is a MUST and you'll
want to carry it with you at all times. Nausea, headache and chills are
signs you've not hydrated enough.

Head covering. MUST do.

Check and add to the playa events calendar
http://www.burningman.com/calendar/playa/, and print it out if you'd like.
We have the "What, Where, When" on site, but additions may have been made
to the calendar.

LEAVE NO TRACE. Again, I can't stress this enough. There will be NO
dumpster onsite. Reduce your trash (packaging, etc.) before arrival. Take
EVERYTHING when you leave. YOU ARE THE CLEAN UP CREW! Secure all items
prone to movement by the wind. Cigarette butts should NOT be snuffed out on
the ground. Make your own mobile wind-resistant container.

DUST: This is a dusty dry city. Drive like a snail through camp. Then park
your rig. Use your lip balm and lotion, the playa will suck the moisture
out of you and everything with you.

SPEED: don't through Wadsworth and Nixon. I was trailed by a tribal police
car as I brakes heavily to meet the 35 then 25 MPH speed limit through
Nixon at 9 pm last night. And, in Gerlach the speed limit is 25 MPH.
Speeding through town is frowned upon as local pets are hard to see at
times.

Be nice to the Black Rock City DPW (Department of Public Works). They are
your friends. Will Roger, builder of this wild and wooly city, is profiled
in the first edition of the Black Rock Gazette which you'll receive at the
gate. If you see this hard working man in the yellow hat and t-shirt thank
him profusely. Without him and his crew we would have no Black Rock City!

IF YOU ARE DRIVING THROUGH RENO AND HAVE ROOM IN YOUR CAR, stop by the
Melting Pot at 1002 South Wells Ave. The exit is off of I-80 and says Wells
Ave, head south. It's on the right. This is a way station for those without
a ride. This works until Wed. when the Melting Pot closes and they come to
Burning Man. ANOTHER OPTION: swing by the airport....there are plenty of
folks who won't be renting a car, and would like a ride. THANKS.

STUFF:

"Ranger Radio Every Day at 11:00 am"

Ranger Director Duane Hoover, also known as Big Bear, has announced that
there will be a daily radio show on 99.5 FM at 11:00am . Big Bear
sez....that the show will include useful information about how to survive,
what's happening that day in Black Rock City, etc. Big Bear also says he
will play a Corny Old Country Song (COCS) every day, and, for balance, a
couple of Suave Urban Contemporary Songs (SUCS) as well. After all, don't
good COCS deserve a couple of good SUCS on a more or less daily basis???

BURNING DESIRES 12-Step Meeting Group, Friday through Monday, 9/4 - 9/7,
9:00 am, BYO coffee. Come share your wisdom, strength, and hope with us at
Center Camp next to the Cafe. Anyone interested in being secretary for a
meeting in the evening? Contact toladylu-AT-hotmail.com.

AIRCRAFT LANDINGS AT BURNING MAN
The BLM is prohibiting aircraft landing or taxiing within 5 miles of the
event from 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday September 8. You
may land near the camp before that time, but must leave or remain parked
for the duration of the event. You may land and camp on the playa 5 miles
out. This is roughly north of a line drawn from Access 2 (12 miles from
Gerlach) to Trego Hot Springs.

You may connect to the mailing list by sending email to
aviators-request-AT-burningman.com with "subscribe" in the body of the
message. Aviators and non-aviators are invited to stop by Cloud 9 in The
NeighBARhood to voice your support for Black Rock Airport in 1999. We will
have a handheld radio tuned to 122.9 for advisories for pilots landing at
Empire or 5 miles out on the playa.

WEST BOUND TRAVELERS

West Bound Burners - Need a Break?
The Salt Lake City - Black Rock City Welcoming Committee is glad to welcome
travelers from all points east as they head out to Burningman. It's a long
drive, and we know you will be wanting a shower/place to make calls/check
your email/stretch you legs a bit. So, if you are heading through SLC
anytime between now and the 3rd, please post a message with your plans ( be
as specific as you can about your ETA) to the Salt Lake City section of the
Regional Outposts BBS on the Burningman homepage. Let us know how to reach
you and we'll drop you a line with directions and contact information once
you get to town. Once you've left SLC, keep an eye out for Bman mileage
markers posted along the freeway, all the way to the Nevada border.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

"In Case Of An Emergency...Using Your CB Or Licensed Ham Radio To Report A
Problem To The Rangers."

=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+

Baker18, Ranger Staff & Emergency Services Coordinator

Baker18 and the rest of the Ranger staff strongly encourage all Burning Man
community members to bring a CB or licensed HAM radio with you for Burning
Man '98.

If you do bring a CB or licensed HAM radio this year, you can use it to
reach the Rangers in the case of a medical emergency, disturbance, or other
problem that the Rangers might be able to assist you with.

In the event of an emergency, tune to the appropriate channel for your
radio, and call "Break Break Emergency Traffic." A dispatcher should answer
your call quickly. Once contact has been established, be prepared to state
your name, your location (theme camp, landmark(s), intersection, and/or
other distinguishing features), and the nature of the emergency. Once you
have had contact with the dispatcher, try to remain in radio contact until
the Rangers arrive to assist with the situation.

Following ARRL protocol dispatchers will be monitoring the 2 meter and 70
centimeter Wilderness Protocol frequencies continuously. Dispatchers will
also monitor CB channel 8 continuously. Please do not use these frequencies
for other purposes, as they may interfere with someone reporting an
emergency to the Rangers.

Frequencies:
CB: 8
2m: 146.52 (No CTCSS or PL tone)
70cm: 446.0 (No CTCSS or PL tone)

Please note that Family Radio Service (FRS) license-free radios are NOT
able to reach Ranger dispatch.
