Subject:       Avant-Garde ???


Dear all, 

Although I have been on the list a while this is the first message 
I've sent to it.

It was just a clarificatory question:

I don't  know about the USA but here in the UK the term avant-garde 
tends not to be used much for recent artists. Is this because the 
avant-garde no longer exists or that the revolutionary social 
situation no longer throws up radical artists or that it has not been 
replaced by the broader concept of the 'counter culture' ?

This may be a unfair question to attempt to answer but it would be 
intersting to hear peoples suggestions.
