The notion in the west at least , in terms of 'modern' was to make the
shift from a maker based art involved in ontological self-reflection to a
viewer based art that provoked epistomological  reflexivity.  This is after
all is a residual aspect of an Enlightenment ideology that would dismantle
metaphysics and in turn produce a self conscious subject.
