movement that was made up of many groups-- the response there was that
everyone else formed a network that ignored those trying to take over
such that they were unable to achieve their goal and the movement went on
without them. This same group had originally tried to do the same thing at
the national level --with the same result: being increasingly ignored by
everyone else. At the time, I argued publically against their centralized
vision of unity that it was not only a bad idea but simply wouldn't work
because there was no need within the rhizome of support for the Zaps that
had emerged, information, discussion and collaboration flowed so quickly
over the internet that their efforts only served to slow down the
self-organization that was going on rapidly all over the place. In other
situations, time after time, I've seen the same thing you recount in SF
--the attempt to impose some kind of ideological "unity" destroy the
enthusiasm and willingness to collaborate of people unwilling to subject
themselves to party discipline.
