I unfortunately knew someone who was tortured, and not for some high ideal or freedom fight, but for a joy ride. 1983 and I was a junior at highschool, two seniors and two juniors went for a joyride, wrapped the car around a pole, the two senior and one junior got away. The fourth boy was caught by some patrolmen as he was limping away. He was lucky, his father had a cousin in the army (thats how things work in Pakiland) and they traced him and got him out the next day. However, by then he had confessed to 3 murders, 11 armed robberies and other assorted crimes. Pakistan police have these targets, solve 70% of crimes, etc. So, once in a while they pick some one up, and that person confesses to most of the crimes in the district. However, I digress. He was in hospital for a couple of weeks. Had been sodomized with a bristley something, bit of an overkill for a 17 year old, who would have signed anything after a few slaps. Being teenagers, we piled him with questions as soon as he returned to school. What was it like?, how long did he resist? What was on his mind? etc. The gist of what he said. (translated from teenagerese) "There is nothing on your mind. You aren't thinking of God, or sexual abuse, or anything. your cortex shuts down, and primitive pain avoidance circuits kick in. You will do anything, say anything to make the pain stop. and once it stops, do and say anything to make sure it doesn't come back." Torture is pretty simple. Psychological, emotional and chinese water torture are luxuries. People who do this for a living keep things simple and efficient. Fuck. Too many bad memories. Will go and abuse some beer cans.
