i don't think they'll try to cancel the election; it would be a lot more effective to hijack the vote and retain some legitimacy that way.  over here, in the wake of the 2000 florida fiasco, a lot of states have adopted very dodgy electronic voting systems, many made by a bush backer called dibold, that are very suseptible to hacking and fraud.  given some terrorist activity, i can easily imagine a stolen election.  

the key is to make sure there is confusion and doubt during the period leading up the vote.  hell, they may not even have to cheat if they can produce a really, really impressive event.  and i'll bet they can produce a humdinger of an 'event' if they put their collective mind to it.

that's how i would do it.
