Hobey, you hit the nail right on the head. When I first got into puppetry,
I feared I would be obsolete before I even got going, due to the increasing
special effects I saw in movies and TV. How could I possibly compete with
that?
However, I am now more than ever a firm believer in a good story being the
most important thing. A performer can have the most beautifully sculpted
puppet, or scenery, but if the story isn't there, the audeince won't soon be
either. I believe that as the world becomes increasingly high tech, people such as
puppeteers will become even more unique. Street performers will become like
dinosaurs coming back to life. If our lousy economy ever comes back
(hopefully within a year or two), I think puppeteers will be in greater demand than
ever.
