Yes, there was a Belgian company that had a puppet that sang an aria from
Madama Butterfly while lit by candles. They were so annoyed by not being
able to use the fire that they played the soundtrack to a blank stage and
shined bright lights in the audience's eyes. There was a Russian company
who used actual burning candles (they hadn't told anyone nor asked
permission) in the middle of a stage strewn with crumpled newspaper. That
made me nervous.

I remember the San Francisco festival very well. There were fire
issues in several shows, as I remember. Your use of the TV was, by far,
the
cleverest and quickest thinking I have seen before or since, for that
matter.
