Ah... Animation, a subject dear to my heart!  Hey my full time GIG for 14 
years!

Ok,
2 D packages....
Flash- great 2D animation.   I would not go any lower than FLASH 8 for a 
starting point, however.
Mirage - great Animation package for 2D.  Great filters and pen controls. 
SMOOOOOOOOTH!


3D packages,
Animation Master, low price, but delivers high end results.
3DS MAX - also a great program, little clunky on the interface and user 
input
MAYA - industry standard in animation
Blender  - Free, but will take some ramp up time to get up and running

What kind of animation are you wanting to do?
