Subject: [Puptcrit] Rasps
When I was talking about my bench and mallet and chisel........I'm
mainly talking of the ventriloquist figures I do. For marionette
heads.......I use this and also hand held for carving with a no. 19
exacto blade and heavy handle.
OK......I also use rasps. Heavy ones. I know they make grooves
into the wood, but if you want a smooth head.......it'll do the trick.
Then, I use a hand sander with 100 medium grit sandpaper to smooth
out the grooves. Some may still be left at the top of the head(north
and south grain), but spackling will cure that. I have a large rasp
and smaller curved rasps to go around cheeks, etc. I use the rasps
with a glove on my hand and not a handled one.
I then go back over the faces with 150 sandpaper to smooth. I paint
the figure head with several coats of paint and then stipple the last
coat for no shine.
Then........the cheeks and other areas are blended with a blush.
