I do have handsaws to work with.

I also know I'm not good enough to make the cuts ideally straight enough for 
the job of glueing pieces together. Even with a miter box, it's a bit wobbly 
(my miter box's slit is too wide, always has been).

Hence the idea of sanding down the pieces on a piece of sandpaper secured to 
a panel which is then secured to the workbench. I can use very coarse 
sandpaper for this.

Maybe, for bigger pieces if I ever need them, I'll have the wood "planed" 
when I buy it.
