Hobey, you got lost off the Long Island Expressway in Queens??? Elise and I
live in Queens, at least part of the year. You were probably 5 minutes from
our apartment!!! If you had only called, I could have been your private
Tom-Tom. Wait a second. That doesn't sound right. I have a 3-year old Dodge
Grand Caravan with 129,000 miles (averaging 43,000 miles per year). When I
first started on the road, I used to unload everything into the motel. As
the years passed, and my bones ached more, I now leave my wood frame stage and
75 pound fibre case in the van (which has tinted windows because of the Florida
sinshine). I bring in my Passpot sound system, small trunk which has the
puppets and blue tote bag, which has lights and wires and cables. I figure if
anyone is willing to schlep my fibre case and stage away from my van in the
middle of the night, they are welcome to what remains of my career.
Now that Elise is no longer working, she tours with me a lot, which
makes the trips so much less lonely. We try to sightsee whenever we can, but
there never seems to be enough time.
I listen to NPR wherever I can get it, and have tons of CD's in the car.
Believe it or not, I have never used books on tape, although I always meant
to.
As far as dining, I find that challenging, and we usually do fast food
salads for lunch, and try to find local restaurants for dinner that aren't
expensive.
I agree with your truck driver analogy. I always considered myself a
trucker/moving man/puppeteer.
When I was young and had hair, I used to love to get out on the road.
Now, I do it only because of necessity.
