Subject: [Puptcrit] What Bil Baird told me...
Steven,
This is interesting; because Bil told me his theatre stopped public
performances because he made it an Equity Union house and then the union
required the puppeteers be paid more than the house could support...it was a
very intimate small theatre.
I would like to hear from anyone about their experience with the actor's
union?
Years ago I took my child to the Disney Broadway production of Beauty and
the Beast that had puppets for wolves yet I didn't know of any puppeteers
hired for the show. I thought the wolves were just getting a good shake from
some actors or perhaps stage hands. Can anyone clear this up for me?
How about some history between puppeteers and the Unions?
Thanks,

Bil Baird's theater at Barrow Street in Greenwich Village ran from 1967 to
1978, only 11 years. But it sure was special!
My own theater at Union Square ran from 1987 to 1998, also 11 years.
Both theaters succumbed to the soaring price of the real estate they
occupied.

What about the Bil Baird Marionette Theater on Barrow Street in NYC? Ah,
the happy, exciting times I spent there.
