We didn't know if we would be allowed to cover the full parade route with the puppets, because of the "carrying a stick" issue that had come up in other locations. The arms of these puppets are actually long sticks. We had a woman from Code Pink who served as the "liaison between puppets and police", but the police didn't try to stop us. There's a long history of peaceful, really big puppets around here. The only problems with completing the parade route came from the wind and the heat. Is it really the case? When peace marches were organized back in 2003, laws were enacted that prevented protest marchers from carrying any type of stick (as used in large puppets). For many years, masks have been prohibited in certain areas, especially government buildings.=A0 I kept trying to think of a way that protesters could somehow get by these laws -- maybe have colored hat messages...?=A0 Rolande =A0=A0=A0 -----Original Message----- From: Mathieu René <creaturiste-AT-primus.ca> To: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Sent: Sun, 7 Dec 2008 4:02 pm Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Puppeteer terrorist from Maryland On page two of the article, they mention a Nadine Bloch, who makes giant paper mache puppets. Maybe she's the puppet maker in question? The absurdities the article refers to comes as no surprise to me. In my 31 years of life experience, it seems to me that the bigger and more complex and powerful an organisation, the less common sense it seems to posess. Governmental entities seem to suffer even more from that syndrome. History repeats itself, sadly. But it will only keep doing so if we let it. One example: Back when the english came and conquered the French here in the province of Quebec (hence making Canada a British-ruled country, which it still is "officially" today), some english troup broke into a local puppeteer's place and paraded with the puppets , as a sort of mockery. I think the puppets were then destroyed. I believe the nickname of the artist was Pere Marseilles. I hear in some parts of the USA, puppets are forbidden from parades and marches. Is it really the case? _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Admin interface: http://lists.puptcrit.org/mailman/listinfo/puptcrit Archives: http://www.driftline.org _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Admin interface: http://lists.puptcrit.org/mailman/listinfo/puptcrit Archives: http://www.driftline.org _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Admin interface: http://lists.puptcrit.org/mailman/listinfo/puptcrit Archives: http://www.driftline.org
