True, and thanks for the oven mitt idea, a silicone insert would work  fine 
and
 if thick enough less fatigue .
 
   Here is tip 101 - If your looking for a life like tongue for  the puppet, 
use one of
  the silicone shoe inserts, trimmed to shape, looks great and very  life 
like, now if
 you can find a pinkish/red one your in business, otherwise covering  it with 
a slip on
 outer cover of fabric (red in color) will still provide a lifelike  tongue. 
but with critters it
 will not matter., if one can find the silicone oven mitt you speak of  in 
red or pink.
then you can cut out many tongues for use
