Thanks for the link, Mark - here's a shorter one going to the same
article on another site...

(Optimized for MS Internet Explorer, unfortunately)

I only visited Kaohsiung once while my wife and I were living in Taiwan
in the Eighties, but Taiwan is the place where my childhood love of
puppetry was rekindled as an adult. We never owned a television during
the two years that we lived there, so I managed to completely miss out
on the contemporary Pili puppet phenomenon, but we enjoyed street
performances that itinerant puppeteers gave from the backs of trucks
which had been converted into rolling stages. (In retrospect, watching
Mandarin language TV might have been a helpful supplement to my daily
classes.)

Besides enjoying the street performances, I visited Chinese folk art and
culture museums there with great collections of old puppets and stages.
Unfortunately I didn't become aware of the depth of Taiwan and southern
China's puppetry heritage until investigating it on the Internet a few
years ago. If we ever go back I'll have a much better idea of where to
go and what to look for.

Thanks again,
